Don't Skimp on the "Getting Ready" Photos

When brides and grooms are getting dressed and about to head down the aisle, they usually dress in hidden away places like their home bedrooms or special suites. They are often "locked away" with the family and friends that are near and dear to them. At this very intimate time, you begin to see why the bride picked exactly who she picked to be apart of her wedding day. You see the bond of years of childhood friendships unfold as the bridesmaids, wearing matching shirts, gather to make sure the brides hair and make-up are just perfect.You see who the groom's real "boys" are in his most anxious moments, like when he can't get that top button done on his tuxedo shirt. You see a glimpse of a tear as Mom pins on her son's boutonniere and you see the tremendous emotion on Dad's face, when he first gets a glimpse of his "little girl" in her wedding dress.

Special moments like this should not be missed because they cannot be duplicated or replicated. Make sure your wedding day schedule includes enough time for your chosen photographer and videographer to shoot these priceless, one of a kind moments. You may not think it is that big of a deal now, but looking back at your photographs and memories of the day, you will find that replaying or viewing these special moments are the ones that make you feel all warm and fuzzy inside.

Event Quality Vs. Event Quantity

I attended a fundraising event for an organization some time ago and we all know how those go right? Somewhat stuffy, everyone sharing business cards and putting on the proper netwoking face. When I got there I was somewhat disappointed, because the attendence was low; you always hope for a big turnout for any fundraising or networking event. But as the evening went on I realized that time had slipped away and I had stayed longer than my declared exit time. By the time I had gotten home, after midnight by the way, I realized that I had a really great time. Pondering this event and what made it so memorable was the fact that there was a small attendance. I found the attendees more relaxed and open to more profound, unrushed, and unrehearsed conversations. The group was cozy, and a lot of fun. I got to see sides of people I don't usually get to see. At the end of the evening, I felt as though I experienced the quality of people as opposed to the quantity of people.

For your next event, consider what you hope to provide to your guests or attendees. Are you trying to pack the place to show who you are and what you are capable of , and thereby, not truly connecting with anyone due to the sheer number of people there? Or, are you trying to make a connection, where you leave an impression with your guests or attendees, that causes them to remember you or your event, long after the show has ended.

When preparing that guest or attendee list, consider quality over quantity. Not only is it sometimes more cost effective but people remember moments and experiences with you, their host. Make sure your guest list doesn't have so many people on it that you won't be able to connect with each and every person that you felt was important to invite in the first place.

Just a Few of My Favorite Things!

Surfing the net can be dangerous sometimes, especially if you are shopper like me. You run across the best finds and things that you just can't live without. The hubby and I have been in the home redecorating mode and of course, we don't always agree on a certain couch, table or lighting element. But that's okay, I can still shop and decorate the way I want, with what I want, on my blog. And I was about due for a posting anyway so I hope you don't mind that I chose to share my surfing/shopping loves with you. Let's start with my fave, chandeliers.

Chandeliers are all the rage now. You can add a touch of bling to any room with a chandelier. I especially love when they are placed over a bathtub in a master suite. Talk about glamourous. You can put them any where you want; after all, it's your space and you can do what you want with it. I can just imagine this "retro glamour" fixture in my home office, right over the sitting area. Granted, it's not pink but I like it anyway.

In an effort to be fair and reasonable, I have included another choice for my office chandelier that I think my hubby would be more open too. It has the opulence that he loves, plus the graceful elegance that I love. I think this is one we can agree on. The chandelier is from the John-Richard Collection and you can find it here. I just love the scroll work on this piece. I think it has great blend of the past with a modern flair.

Next, I found some great seating for the bedroom that is useful as well as pretty. Check out this oversized ottoman that really does double duty. You can store 8 pairs of shoes in the attached shoe pockets and you even have open space in the middle to store additional shoes or handbags. And how about a little bling for your work area and for those every day work items. A jeweled wireless mouse and a jeweled USB drive. With bling like this, I can almost predict that a lot of work would get done. You can find these and other great desk accessories here.

Pets as Wedding Party Attendants

You have your heart set on little Fifi walking down the aisle as your flower "girl". You have picked out a wreath for her to wear and you are even toying with a dress to match the wedding theme and colors.

This is not a shocking idea considering the popularity of pets being included as part of the wedding party. This popularity is evidenced by the availability of decorated dog leashes, doggie bow ties, wreaths, or ring pillows that Fido can wear.

Before making the overall decision about including your pet, there are a few details you should consider.

First and foremost, make sure your venue site allows pets at the venue and make sure they approve everything you have planned for your pet.
Second, make sure your pet is prepared and can handle all of the excitement surrounding your wedding. Too many people, unusual noise, and flashes from photography can upset your pet and cause him or her to behave in an unusual or aggressive manner. Be prepared for a quick exit or plan "b," just in case your pet can't perform as expected.
Third, create a plan to handle liability issues just in case your pet injures someone or damages some property at the venue.
Make sure your pet is properly bathed and groomed for the big day. Canine cologne is not the scent you want your guests to remember. Don't forget paper towels, plastic bags food and a water bowl.
And last, have a designated person (not you) assigned to handle and care for your pet. It should be someone that your pet is familiar with and someone that will not be upset about missing any of the festivities, in response to caring for your pet.

With all things considered, including your pet will make the day all the more special for you and him as well. So go ahead, put that bow tie on Scruffy and let him proudly walk down the aisle as the cutest ring bearer ever.

My New VuPoint Scanner

Oh how I love coming home from a productive day to find nice little packages waiting for me, and today was one of those days. This past holiday weekend, the hubby and I were channel surfing, and stumbled upon the Home Shopping Network (HSN). I quickly noticed that it was the electronics segment and so I took interest. You would be surprised how much techno stuff you can learn by watching the shopping channels. They try to sell you on all the latest gadgets, there by educating you while entertaining you. I don't necessarily buy the item but I remember info about it so that when I am ready to buy, I will know some of the basics of what should be included and about how much it should cost.

Anyway, the particular item being showcased was a portable scanner. Now I have been considering a number of options for a scanner, since my tax accountant got on me about my shoebox accounting system (don't laugh), and when I saw this scanner, I heard angels singing. My hubby got excited too which only added fuel to the engine. And to top it off, it was pink. Well, there were other good colors too. I immediately purchased one for me and one for him, hot pink and aqua blue.

You can scan photos, pages from books, and even fabrics. This little gizmo will really come in handy for business organization as well as color matches and design ideas for events. Now we have no excuses about not handling receipts and business paperwork better. As a small business, how or what have you done recently to keep yourself more organized?

Decor Ideas for Summer Celebrations

With the 4th of July quickly approaching, no doubt you are planning for or attending a festive celebration somewhere. With all of the preparations they have going on, I am sure they would be most appreciative of your thoughtfulness and creativity. Star Spangled Sparklers

For the Star Spangled Sparkers (pictured to the right) you will need :

Mailing tubes and plugs in assorted sizes
Red, white and blue construction paper
Glue stick
Scissors
Silver tassels
Star-shaped paper punch
Assorted ribbons and rickrack

1. Cover a tube in construction paper, using glue to secure

2. Use scissors or a knife to carefully make a small slot in one plug. Thread silver tassels through opening and tie in a knot to secure.

3. Decorate by gluing star-shaped cutouts and ribbons on tubes as desired. If you want to use them as party favors, fill with candy.

Want something different other than the standard guest book for your wedding or special event? If so, you are in luck. There are so many great, creative options out there now, that you can just about do whatever you want to cherish the well wishes of your family and guests. I love the options where you can incorporate the well wishes and signatures of your guests into the decor of your home. What about the idea of a memory platter because this is something you can display in your home, maybe on an entry table or fire place mantle, near your framed wedding photo.

I really like the idea of personal artwork, created by the bride or groom. It could be a sketch of a tree or home; very simple in design. If you are not the artsy type, you can find beautiful artwork like these on Etsy. But I am sure you can create something personal to share at your wedding or event, to showcase as your own special piece of artwork.

Travel Planning

I am so excited because I am planning another travel adventure. Nothing as exotic as my recent Caribbean cruise but a travel adventure none the less. We have a family wedding coming up in April 2012 and the wedding is in Alexandria, VA. Now I will be traveling from Houston and the rest of the family will be traveling from New Orleans. So this will be quite an expense for a lot of us, not only getting there but hotel lodging and food as well.
As much as I like to travel, I will never go into debt doing it. I am saver when it comes to stuff I really want and travel is very high on my list of wants. Therefore, I have to save for this trip and realize with 10 months to discipline myself to save, I should have a nice little stash to not only get me to the wedding but to also enjoy some sites and adventures while I am there. I am going to start the 1st of June and save with a "gazelle like intensity" - for all you Dave Ramsey fans out there.
If you are planning a trip, say a honeymoon perhaps, make some decisions about the planning process. Don't approach it with a carefree, no thought concept because this approach will only bring disappointment; if not on the trip itself then for certain when you get the credit card bills or look at your bank statement and you realize that you spent money you should not have spent.

Adventures in Meeting & Conference Coordination

Well, this past week, I had the wonderful opportuntity to return to my roots, working with an association group that is near and dear to my heart. This group has been around for just a few years and yes, they are small in relation to other associations. They operate with a very small budget but still, they are a hard working group and believe in education, networking and support coupled with caring and relaxation. NACE - Houston Wedding Trends 2011

We attended the NACE - Houston Wedding Trends Event and all I can say is "wow." The theme for the event was "First Class Ticket to Trends," and it was truly first class. The cocktail hour was held at the historic Air Terminal Museum, and then all of the guests were "trollied over" to the tarmac and hangar where the big event and festivities were held. The temperature was humid and breezy as only Houston can be, but that only enticed a dress code of destination beach wedding; how fitting.

This great event was an opportunity to open your mind and to think out of the box when planning your wedding or next event. My friends kept saying that I looked as if I was daydreaming most of the evening, and in retrospect, I guess I was. My mind was working overtime, thinking of ways to incorporate some of the amazing ideas that I saw at this event. And did we mention the food - AMAZING. There were food variations and flavor combinations that I never considered, let alone tasted. Houston is full of talented vendors and designers, and it was great to see them all come together to create a destination experience and treat for the eyes and taste buds. Destination Wedding Feel, Right In Your Own BackYard

A few months ago, I traveled to Grand Cayman, Cayman Islands for a relaxing vacation as well as to do some research for some destination wedding events. A destination wedding can be a beautiful experience for not only you but your guests as well. These wedding events are usually very intimate, and create many opportunities for fun, travel and celebration. As great as these type of events are, sometimes that much dreamed about locale just won't work with every budget.

A dear friend and client is experiencing this exact issue. She is wanting a tropical, destination wedding but financially, the timing is just not right to do any traveling. So she is opting for a local venue with a lake. She loves the sand, the sun and the aqua blues and green of the ocean and, so that is where we started. It's important to her that her guests feel the casual elegance of a beach, even if there isn't a beach.Take a look at the inspiration boards we created to help start the planning process.

Saying "Thank You" Is Still Important

When was the last time you attended a wedding, and sent a gift, only to never have your gift acknowledged. It's disappointing to speculate but I bet it was very recent. As a guest, I am sure you invested the time, energy and financial resources to purchase just the right gift for a couple that was near and dear to your heart. First of all, you want to know that they received your gift and then, you want to know, that they know that you gave them this certain gift. Gift giving is special and the process of receiving that gift should be treated as such.

A note of "thank you" means much more than you realize, and somewhere along the way, some of us have forgotten that. Does it really take that much more time to write a personal note acknowledging a gift. No, it doesn't. If you prepare yourself for the process of writing your thank you notes, and schedule a time to do the writing, it becomes that much easier. To start, order some beautiful stationary notes to accompany the design of your wedding invites, or get something made especially for you, something to serve as your signature stationary. I haven't met anyone that doesn't get excited about writing on beautiful stationary. While selecting your stationary, go ahead and splurge on that fabulous writing instrument that just feels so good in your hand and that just writes so well. To add an even more personal touch, get some personalized postage stamps and keep them on hand so there is never the excuse of being without a stamp. Aim to mail your thank yous no later than three months after receiving a gift. Snail mail can be a pain but this is one of those times that it is expected. "What about email," you ask? I say it's a don't, but that's my personal choice.

Ten Do’s and Don’ts of Thank You Notes

1.Do personalize your notes and make reference to the person as well as the gift.

2.Do remember that a gift should be acknowledged with the same courtesy and generous spirit in which it was given.

3.Do be enthusiastic, but don’t gush. Avoid saying a gift is the most beautiful thing you have ever seen unless you really mean it.

4.Don’t send form letters or cards with printed messages and just your signature; don’t use email or post a generic thank you on your wedding web site in lieu of a personal note.

5.Do promptly acknowledge the receipt of shipped gifts by sending a note right away or calling and following up with a written note in a day or two.

6.Don’t mention that you plan to return a gift or that you are dissatisfied in any way.

7.Don’t tailor your note to the perceived value of the gift; no one should receive a perfunctory note.

8.Do refer to the way you will use a gift of money. Mentioning the amount is optional.

9.Don’t include wedding photos or use photo cards if it will delay sending the note.

10.Don’t use being late as an excuse not to write. Even if you are still sending notes after your first anniversary, keep writing!

Florals Make a Statement

When you are planning a special event like a wedding, you want to make a statement or impact. One of the most original ways to do this is with your floral decor and bouquets. Think about it. What happens when you place a bouquet of flowers in your home or office? Yes, I know; things suddenly look better and more impressive. Your living room or office didn't change, you just enhanced what you already had with flowers. Think about that little black dress that you have worn so many times. Now, place one medium or large sized bloom on that dress and wow, "Is that a new dress?"

The same applies for wedding and special event decor and bouquets. Add floral however you choose, but speaking for myself, nothing adds impact like monochromatic centerpieces and bouquets.

Wedding Design Trends from TSE2011

I wasn't able to attend The Special Event 2011 in Phoenix this year, (I was so disappointed but other business matters took precedence this year), but thanks to some wonderful new Twitter friends, I felt as if I was right there, in the middle of all the action. The Special Event is a great opportunity to network with event planning professionals and vendors from all over the country. As an attendee, you also get to choose from an abundance of seminars on weddings, marketing, design, catering, etc, all taught by some of the best in the event planning field. Every year attendees go home, equipped with new tips and trends in the field, to "wow" our wonderful clients, and this year was no different.

Below are some photos of vendors and events at The Special Event, including the Wedding Lunch ~ "In Love with Metallics", shared on the blog of Melissa Kay Allen. The Wedding Lunch at The Special Event is coordinated and designed by some of the top event planners in the country. It allows the opportunity to showcase new and fresh ideas and this years idea introduces us to the trend of metallics. Look for metallics to be used in all seasons this year; everywhere from table and chair linens, invitations, to centerpieces and place settings.

Houston's Newest Event Planning Studio

Yesterday was the grand opening of the Event Luxe & Co.; and a grand event planning group and venue were exhibited right before our very eyes. This group is a collection of some of Houston's best wedding and event professionals, meeting the needs of clients planning a wedding or other special event, all under one roof. At Event Luxe & Co., vendors can display their work, office within the space, meet clients, and host industry events. Clients enjoy the luxury of visiting a beautiful studio and selecting all the vendors they need to complete their event planning experience.

The Event Luxe & Co. Studio is owned by Erika Madison. She and her husband have done an amazing job putting this studio together. The photos really don't do the studio justice but it was the best I could do. The studio is also available for intimate weddings or other special or social events. We are so thrilled to be one of the vendors associated with this fabulous group.

My Favorite Reception Food Trends for 2011

Still trying to figure out what scrumptious dishes to serve at your wedding reception? Well, Event Solutions Magazine has come up with the suggested catering trends for 2011, recommended by experts in the hospitality industry. Here are a few of my favorites.

Pies for entrees and dessert - Are cupcakes really on their way out? I hope not, but a deep dish apple pie sounds very appetizing. And speaking of Chicken Pot-Pie as an entree, yummy for the tummy.
Smaller Food - Two-bite hot dogs, tacos, burritos, are not necessarily new but they are becoming more mainstream, especially for active receptions where guests are moving about, greeting and dancing. In New Orleans, they have done mini po-boys and muffalatas for years, and they are always a big hit.
Old Italian Dishes -Familiar dishes like spaghetti, lasagna and other regional Italian ingredients.
Down-home Southern cooking - Grits will become an all-purpose starch. Well, down south it always has been. I remember fish and grits every Friday for dinner, and they predict that shrimp and grits could be the next popular dish.

Alpha Prosperity Events would like to wish all of our clients, fans and supporters a very Happy and Prosperous New Year! With the approach of 2011 right around the corner, we know that the new year will bring on new energy, fresh ideas, and a renewed creative spirit to be all that we can. And no, I have no plans to sabotage myself by making any new year's resolutions but I have already set some goals for 2011. For those that follow me on Twitter, you already saw my statement for goal setting borrowed from A. Glasgow ~ "In life, as in football, you can't score and find success if you don't know where the goalposts are." Keeping this in mind, how many of you actually have a goal set for something in particular?

This statement can apply to something as simple as event and wedding planning as well. Let's say you are planning a wedding for 2011 or 2012, and your only thought is that you want your wedding day to be perfect. Well, if you haven't put a measurement on what is perfect or what will make it perfect, how do you know when you have reached it. Or, if you haven't set the amount you intend to invest on certain items, you may find yourself short changed on the one thing that would have made your wedding perfect. When planning your big day, your business venture or anything else, make sure you establish where you are trying to go and what you are trying to reach; otherwise, you may wind up with a lot of fumbles, interceptions, and unhappy team players.

"Houston, We Have Granted a Wedding Wish!"

Just a little teaser of what we have been up to for the past several weeks. We have been super busy planning and coordinating a beautiful wedding for a beautiful couple at the spectacular La Torretta Resort & Spa in Montgomery, TX. As mentioned in a previous blog, we got the chance to plan the first wedding event for the Wish Upon a Wedding - Houston Chapter, and it has been a tremendous experience.

Esmeralda and Jose-Luis make a beautiful couple. We really enjoyed meeting their wonderful family, many of who came all the way from Weslaco, Texas. They were a great couple to work with and they made my job as their wedding planner, oh so easy and memorable. The bride was clear about her wedding vision but was also flexible about working with us and the other vendors so that we could get her the dream wedding she wanted; and thank goodness because we had about thirty days to get this dream wedding planned, coordinated and celebrated. To add a special note for us, we got the chance to work with so many wonderful wedding and event vendors that were instrumental to the beauty and success of this event. I must say a huge thank you to them all and that I hope to get a chance to work with many of them again. We even got the opportunity to make many new friends throughout the process.

Wish Upon A Wedding Houston Wish Granter

Yes, I know we've been missing on our blogging duties for the last couple of weeks but it has truly been a whirlwind of activity for Alpha Prosperity Events. Some of this excitement centers around the wonderful opportunity of participating as a wish granter for the 1st wedding event for Wish Upon Wedding, Houston Chapter.

Wish Upon a Wedding provides weddings and vow renewals for couples who have faced terminal illness or other serious life-altering circumstances. When we were asked to provide the wish/service of wedding planning to a deserving couple it was a "no-brainer" for us, and it has been non-stop planning meetings and activity since meeting this beautiful wedding couple. To make this even more interesting, we have less than thirty days to get this wedding event planned, produced and completed.

Choose Professional Photographers for Great Memories

Great memories are made even greater by great photographers. I know this a strange statement coming from someone that is not a photographer but it's the truth. I must give kudos to the excellent professional photographers out there because a professional photographer can make something out of very little. A professional photographer knows what equipment to use, how much lighting or flash is necessary for light challenged situations and they know exactly how to position themselves to get the perfect shot.

These are things to remember when you are thinking about getting a friend of the family or other family member to be your photographer. Yes, they may have a digital camera, but do they know how to use it. A professional photographer is also less likely to get caught up in the wedding celebration and family festivities, so he or she will tend to get a broad range of photos of all the happenings and all the guests at your wedding. When you choose a family member or friend, you may end up with a hundred photos of the new baby, who made their debut at your wedding. Kids are cute but, you are the bride and groom after all.

If Music be the Food of Love...

What is a wedding or any event for that matter without music. Music sets the mood and creates the backdrop or scenery for the masterpiece you are creating with your event. Music can create memories, renew relationships and restore the spirit. Much like food, music creates atomosphere.

When selecting music for your wedding reception, don't box yourself in with only one choice or vendor. Of course you may want either that band or deejay to keep the party rolling but what about music selections to impress and wow. Why not kick your wedding reception off with a fabulous bride and groom entrance along with a second line band and parade. With that kind of trumpet solo, all will stop and pay attention. Mariachi bands are also very exciting here in Texas but don't think you can't get a mariachi band in Michigan. And of course, for something a little more formal consider a group of symphony musicians or trumpeteers. Your guests may or may not be familiar with this type of music or entrance but I guarantee it will make an impact. As a matter of entertainment, you will be introducing your guests to something new, something that is sure to be memorable. Finally, a television bridal series that I look forward to watching. Glad to see things are looking up for plus-size brides, who want to be drop-dead gorgeous on their wedding day too. We at Alpha Prosperity Events will be following this series to see if the designers are sending appropriate sample dress sizes for the plus-size bride. If Kleinfelds and Randy Fenoli can't set the tone for a change, where sample wedding dress sizes are concerned, I don't know who can. The series starts October 1, 2010 on TLC. Cake Charms - A Memorable Gift for Bridesmaids

Often times we hear so much about the "bridezilla" demanding that everyone and everything be about her, we forget that there are future brides out there, that truly appreciate their family and closest friends being a part of their special day. Even with all of the wedding planning excitement, these brides realize that her friends and family have taken on not only a huge time commitment to be a part of the wedding, but also a huge financial commitment. There is the purchase of the bridesmaid's dress, chipping in for the bridal shower and bachelorette party, as well as travel and a wedding gift. Many brides purchase jewelry for their bridal party to wear with their bridesmaid dress, but many also want to give their bridal party something a bit more meaningful from the wedding festivities; something to remind their bridesmaids of their bond of friendship during this special time in the bride's life.

In the south, we celebrate a Victorian tradition of cake charms in the wedding or bridal shower cake. The charms are under the bottom layer of the cake, attached to ribbons on the outside of the cake. Before cutting the cake, the bridesmaids, and sometimes other close female friends that are not part of the bridal party, pull one of the ribbons from the cake. Each charm held significance and foretold the bridesmaid’s future. Sometimes color- coded satin ribbons are attached to each charm so that single, married, and junior bridesmaids may pull charms with appropriate messages. Along with their symbolism, wedding charms also make for unique gifts. Bridesmaids may use them as pendants or wear them on charm bracelets. More importantly, they are a reminder of a very special time in a bride’s life. You can find wedding cake charms in bridal shops or catalogs. The following is a listing of the various charm types with their symbolism:

Simple Recipe for Bridal Shower Beauty

I attended a bridal shower recently for one of my brides and I was so impressed with the love for the bride that showed through the work that was done for the shower. The decor was simple but very trendy with pops of color in red, black and white. And don't you just love this cake? So modern, and elegant. A big shout out goes to the brides sister and bridesmaids. They truly went all out for this sweet bride, blessing her with lots of love and gifts to begin wedded bliss.

The attention to detail and placement of objects like food and decor made all the difference for this outdoor shower.

The bride was so moved by all of the attention and we as guests were so touched by her appreciation of us being there. It just goes to show, that as the bride, people want to do so much more for you when you are appreciative, loving and not acting like a bridezilla.

Need organization for all of your wedding and event planning materials. Try the Wonder File. It's a great idea for keeping all of those magazine clippings, fabric and color swatches all in one nice neat place. And you can even take it with you when you need to. I know I sound like an infomercial but I really like the convenience of this file. As a wedding and event planner, having at least two is a great way to keep several things organized by client. And after the wedding planning is done, you can use the file for other organizing needs; unlike some of the other wedding planner folders that are out there.

Sometimes, We All Could Use a Professional!

Well, our new logo has finally been completed. It was such a labor of love to get the right feel and look for a design to represent us and after a lot of investment, it's here. Hope you all like it as much as we do.

I want to thank the wonderful Nicole Mullins for all of the hours and phone consultations she so patiently devoted to me to get this done, the right way. I totally relied on her skills in graphic arts and branding because these were skills that I just didn't have. Could I have done the logo myself? Of course, I could have. I did the last logo, but I wasn't happy with it because I could never get the colors or positioning right, and it just wasn't me. And to be blunt, I just didn't know what the heck I was doing. So I sought out a professional that could listen to my vision and deliver my product, which she did.

My journey through this process is much like planning a wedding. Of course, you can plan it yourself and that is a wonderful experience if you have the time, the energy and the know how to get it done. But after planning your wonderful masterpiece, don't you want to sit back and enjoy the moment. A professional wedding coordinator can make that happen. Sometimes, hiring a professional just makes sense.

Wedding Do's and Don'ts from the Guest's Perspective

One of my event assistants attended a wedding recently and she came back with a list full of things that she found interesting about this wedding. I don’t think she ever considered herself a wedding expert but I must say when it comes to wedding and event coordination, she has definitely been taking notes. Here, we share with you some “Do’s and Don’ts,” from the wedding guest's perspective.

Hire a Wedding Coordinator ~ If you are going to have a wedding guest list of anything over 100 people you should hire someone to organize particular highpoints and activities of the wedding. A wedding coordinator would be beneficial to create timelines to keep things flowing and to keep all players/vendors in the know about when things are happening or when tasks need to be done. Don't leave this task to a family member; they want to enjoy the wedding too.

Don’t Skimp on the Entertainment ~ When hiring a band or DJ, make sure they have the ability to act as the Master of Ceremony. If you have to skimp here, make sure your wedding coordinator can step into this role. Your guests will be very disappointed if you start cutting your cake and they aren't ready with their camera or they are in the restroom and miss the whole thing because there was no emcee to announce what was happening. We have some great recommendations if you need help in this department.

Discuss the Dress Code with the Entertainment ~ Make sure it is clear what they will be wearing while performing. It won't look very cohesive if your guests are dressed in cocktail attire and the band or DJ is dressed in jeans and a t-shirt.

Greet Your Guests ~ As the bride and groom, you made the choice to invite three hundred people to your wedding. I can only assume that you made that choice because all of these people are near and dear to you in some form or fashion. Make sure you get around, visiting every table to speak to as many guests as possible. Of course, you may still miss some people but no one can say you didn't make the effort. My assistant was so disappointed and felt slighted because after traveling quite a distance, and buying a very nice gift, the bride never walked around to say hello to her or any other guests.

Just a little trendy advice from the guests you are inviting to your wedding. Hope you were paying attention.

Dreaming Past Others' Limitations

Don't you find it dissapointing when well-meaning family members or close friends are so unsupportive of your dreams? How do you dream past it? How do you not let their limitations, limit you?

Well, this is definitely not a new issue. Since the beginning of time, someone was always questioning another persons vision, direction, goals or dreams. When you have an inkling of an idea or vision that you want to accomplish, trust me that idea will be challenged or questioned. It's not always meant to snuff out your dream or plan but often times it causes one to change direction or focus. It happened to us as children, when we dreamed of being an actress or ballerina. It happened to us as teens, when we wanted to travel the world or attend an out of state college. It happened to us as adults when we wanted to start our own business or purchase a new home.

By now I am sure you have related to one or two of these. The point is we had a dream or vision that didn't coincide with someone else's. This same dilemma happens to so many brides and grooms to be. Through all of the planning, so many people have gotten involved and pushed their own vision that you no longer see any of the dreams or wishes of the bride or groom. I deal with this as well, especially where my event planning business is concerned. This business is not for everyone and not everyone is ready for the work or risks that one takes when owning a business.

So how do I dream past others' limitations? Well, I seek guidance from God first. I have found that when I do this, I am able to discern what is best. I meditate on scripture and positive quotes of motivation. I also surround myself with positive others, like supportive family members, business coaches and other business professionals that will give me the information and support that I need to accomplish my plan or task. But, be warned. When seeking out others, be prepared that you may get an opinion that has the ability to deflate or derail your whole plan, if you let it. It's okay to seek solicited advice from credible others but understand that their visions or fears do not have to become yours.

Don't let the well meaning intentions or ideas of others hinder or change your vision. In planning your life, business or event, you may realize that there are people who don't want to see you happy or successful. Put these type of people in a category off to the side (the side you don't visit very often,) and keep right on going with your planning, as you intended. Keep your eyes on your goals and on the "who, what, and why of it all." You may find that you have to make some changes here or there but it's okay if you are true to yourself and know that you followed your dream and vision and not someone else's.

• Hire a wedding planner or coordinator that is in touch with you and has a feel for what you want. A planner or coordinator that knows how to get the job done within your guidelines and expectations is key to your successful and memorable wedding event.

Do We Need a Groom's Cake

The first groom's cakes were reserved for guests to take home as a memento of the wedding. For this reason, they were usually made of dark, heavy fruitcake since it is durable and keeps for a long period of time. Contemporary groom's cakes, however, are not bound by old traditions. In more recent times, the groom's cake is a perfect opportunity to express creativity. Today, the cake is meant to be a reflection of the groom’s interests, hobbies, favorite sports, alma mater, profession, or anything else he enjoys.

The cake can be ordered by the bride as a surprise for her groom, by the groom himself, or by the couple, together. If the cake is to be displayed near the wedding cake, its design and presence should not compete with the wedding cake, which should always have top billing in design and placement.

But brides beware. When giving the groom an opportunity to select the design of the groom's cake, one must be prepared for his "unique sense of humor." The groom's cake should not be your first clue that your chosen one is a closet alcoholic, womanizer or avid hunter. Having a wedding planner or coordinator is great for times like this. As your recent best pal, your coordinator is there to remove the stressors, even if that stressor is your groom's selection of a hideous design for his groom's cake.

Wedding Dress Selections for the Second-Time Bride

When I think of a second time or encore bride, a few words that come to mind to describe this bride would be sophisticated, wise, passionate, no-fluff. When I was a second-time bride, I dreaded the thought of going shopping for the dress. And for a shop happy person such as myself, that was a little hard to handle. I didn't want the classic of lace and ruffles, and to be honest, I didn't know what I wanted. The only thing I was sure of was that I did not want to look like a first-time bride or what I thought the first time bride looked like. i just wanted to feel beautiful in the dress that I chose. I was lucky because the first dress I tried on was a complete winner.

Encore Brides Celebrating Their Day, Their Way

As a wedding coordinator, I get lots of etiquette questions from my friends and colleagues about encore or second weddings or wedding celebrations for mature brides. I do enjoy assisting them with these questions because (1) I am an experienced wedding coordinator with lots of knowledge on the subject of wedding planning and (2) I can speak to this particular group of brides, because I too "have been there and done that," so to speak. I have been married to my wonderful husband for 8 years now and yes, it was my second wedding. (I like to think that I got it right this time.) And, when I married for the second time, I was in the 30 years of age and up crowd. Therefore, I do consider myself an experienced authority on the subject at hand.

Planning a wedding for the mature or encore bride is so enjoyable. It is apparent, from early in the planning stages, that these soon to-be-brides are choosing to truly enjoy the moment. The moment of being in love, the moment of finding their soul mate, the moment of being engaged, etc. These are the moments to remember and treasure, and because they may have had a certain type of wedding before, they now want to do things completely different than the first time. Or for those more experienced, mature brides, the "20 Something Wedding" just won't do.

These brides are choosing more intimate celebrations, and they are choosing to make their resources count. Our mature or encore bride is usually more organized and she will have definite ideas about what she wants and what she doesn't want. Because she may be time challanged due to a career, family or both, she will make good use of resources, information and recommendations.

Meaningful Touches Are What You and Your Guests Remember

You know how dance skits of the bride and groom or bridal party were really hot last year? Well, while assisting Events by Audrey, another wedding coordinator in the Houston area, at a super huge, two-day wedding I had the opportunity to see a very touching twist to the dance skit.

After the bride and groom did their thing together on the dance floor, it was time for the father-daughter dance. I was surprised and amazed when the music started and the song playing was "All Night Long," by Lionel Ritchie. I was even more amazed when the bride and her father began their own dance skit to that song. It was so touching to watch this father attempt to keep up with his daughter to do all of the rehearsed moves and hand gestures. And I must say her father did an excellent job. After all, how many of us could actually get our fathers to do an up tempo dance skit in front of hundreds of family and friends? Watching the interaction between the two of them, while they danced together was so meaningful and touching. Watching them dance together gave you a glimpse of their relationship and what it may have been like growing up in that household. It was also a great reminder as to why we wedding planners and coordinators choose to do this job.

So to those who think or say that the dance skit is passe, I say not necessarily so. When you choose to do anything for your wedding, make sure you are choosing to do it because it is meaningful to you and your family. If you do something for that reason, it really doesn't matter how passe or out of date others may think it to be. When your guests see the enjoyment that you and your family members are experiencing, everything falls into place, and you and your guests have something touching and memorable to think back on for years to come.

Event Planning: Splurging vs. Saving

This great article from Tracey Porpora and Bridal Guide, talks about when to splurge and when to save when planning a wedding. A key element throughout the article is that you have to know what is important to you. Many brides and grooms have made the mistake of having someone else's wedding instead of their own because they did not know or articulate what vision was important to them. They listened to everyone else's dreams and priorities, before figuring out what they wanted. This same faux pas is made with other social or corporate events as well. If you don't make a decision about what is important to you, you stand the chance of being the guest of honor at an event designed for someone else and not you.

Planning any type of event, be it a small social event or large corporate function, requires the same thought process. What do you want to remember about the event? What do you want your guests to take away from the event? What's the one or two things you must have to be thrilled by your event? What is not that big a deal or a must have for you? Before viewing venues, and invitations and such, it's always a good idea to take some time to assess what you want your financial investment to be and figure out where to save and where to splurge. No matter what type of investment you intend to make, you will have to make choices about certain areas or plans for your event, so that you can include those things that are important to you.

If you think this task may be very overwhelming, don't fret about it. Hiring an event planner can help you assess what's important to you. You can hire a planner to just help with consultations, or you can hire a planner to help put it all together. And, if you feel like just showing up and have the event be all about you, a planner can make that happen as well. "Hire a wedding planner?!?" Now that's a trendy idea.

I attended a wonderful bridal show event and got to meet a really great vendor whose time has definitely come. Meet the wonderful folks of On-Site Wedding & Event Sitters.

Cher Gray and her team create a wonderful resource to allow your family and guests to enjoy your wedding event "kid free." The folks at On-Site Wedding & Event Sitters express that they offer safe, fun and exciting on-site childcare for children 12 and younger at the location of your event. "Everyone can relax and enjoy your wedding knowing the children are having fun just a room away."

This picture above demonstrates the area for the children that is prepared in the back of the room where the event is held. This is a great option for just a small number of children at the wedding. There is a sitter at the table area with the children as well.

I was so impressed with the set-up, that I was tempted to just hang out and be a kid again.

This is a wonderful option for wedding couples to utilize. It makes it a lot easier when trying to plan the wedding and they know there are a number of guests or family members that may need child care assistance. For the guest or family member that doesn't want to burden the bride or groom with any additional expense, there is the option for the wedding guest to hire the On-Site Sitters for themselves. Entertaining, Quick and Intelligent, the analysis suggests meditating and surrounding myself with this color inspires patience and knowing.

I was so inspired by this because it really hit the mark. As a wedding and event coordinator, I am very passionate about what I do and about helping to make others wishes and dreams come true, helping to create their heart's desire. Did learning this information about colors and my birth month create an aha moment for me? No, not really but it did give me a little insight about why certain colors were in my wardrobe or in my office more than other colors. It gave me some insight of colors to surround myself with I needed energy, or a creativity boost. Now, I don't know if this is an exact science or what, but knowing the info sure doesn't hurt.

I am so excited and proud to say that Coco Trendy has been consistent as a blog for one year. It has been a labor of love and it has been hard, but we made it happen. A big thank you goes out to our dedicated followers, event business supporters and fans. We could not have done this without your support and encouragement. There were times where we reinvented ourselves and went back and forth but our fans stayed loyal and we so appreciate you for that. There are so many blogs out there and I thank you for choosing to check by and see what our trendy take is on the subjects of wedding and event planning and coordination.

This year has been truly exciting for not only the blog, Coco Trendy but also for the management company ~ Alpha Prosperity Event Management. Baby Shower - Blossoming in Springtime

Keeping in sync with my recent post on planning a baby shower, I wanted to share some ideas and themes of my own. I recently had the pleasure of planning a fun baby shower for a client that was expecting twins. The twins arrival was expected around springtime so she wanted a springtime theme, and the colors had to be yellow, lime green and gray. I had a lot of fun putting this together even with a very minimal budget. Small budgets don't have to be restricting if you just use a little imagination and don't box yourself into using traditional baby shower items and decor.

We decided to use "springtime like" items such as baskets of spring flowers, garden stepping stones, butterflies and birds with baby birds nests. Balloons were a given because they always add a festive flavor to small showers and parties.

My first inspiration for the springtime theme came from the idea of bird nests with baby bird eggs. I was able to find some grapevine wreaths to help create the bird nests. It was a very cost effective option. Hobby Lobby carried them in a bunch of six. Candy coated almonds were a great filler for the bird eggs.

Instead of doing a guest sign-in book, we did individual blessing cards, where guests were able to write something more heartfelt to the mom-to-be. I created the blessing cards myself so they were personalized for my client, for the occasion.

There were the usual baby shower games to include the famous "baby shower bingo." When finding great prizes for your games, consider home spa items like lotions, bath gels or jewelry. I got all of the gift or prize items from my wonderful rep at Avon. You get some very nice gifts and you support some of the many fund raising causes that Avon helps support. A huge thank you goes out to my Avon rep, Pam Zackory for her wonderful support. There was food, fellowship and fun and a great time was had by all.

Developing A Theme for Your Baby Shower

In my search for baby shower inspiration I have run across some oh so cute party designs. When developing a theme for your baby shower, there are so many choices and the sky is the limit. You don't have to stick with the traditional concepts. Have a conversation with the mom-to-be, to see if there are colors or characters she may prefer or have in mind. It is really helpful when the theme or colors for the shower flow with the decorating ideas for the nursery.

To help get those creative juices flowing, see how many concepts or theme ideas you can come up with from my above statement, "The Sky is the Limit." A good start may be to create invitations or gifts with an airplane or cloud motif or you can include elements like a sun or rainbow as well. What other suggestions or concepts can you come up with?

We're Going to the Super Bowl.

The New Orleans Saints are going to the Super Bowl, yeah. Forgive me for slipping into my native dialect but I can't tell you how excited I am about the Saints going to the Super Bowl. After so many years of, "we'll get there next year, or we will go all the way, next year," Saints fans can say that our "next year" has finally come. And you know there is going to be a party.

The teams have been determined and the Big Game is less than two weeks away! How will you be enjoying the Super Bowl celebration? How about hosting your own Super Bowl party? It's not as difficult as you think. According to the folks at Hallmark Cards, Inc., Super Bowl parties are one of the top at-home party events of the year. Super Bowl parties have become much more than a gathering of football lovers. In fact, many people attending these parties don't love football as much as they love the excuse to just get together with friends.

Here are a few tips to make your Super Bowl party a super success:

Food is important - let me repeat that. Food is important. Make sure you have lots of the finger foods that people have come to expect during football games. A buffet menu is definately the way to go. That way your guests can eat, talk and move about your party with ease. A simple menu of hot wings, chips & dip, pizza, etc. A New Orleans Super Bowl party will include shrimp poboys, catfish fillets, a pot of gumbo, and maybe some muffalatas.

Make sure you have lots to drink. To keep it simple, soda and beer will do. If you are doing a New Orleans type Super Bowl Party - Hurricanes and Daquiris might be a great addition, along with anything stronger if your party guest can drink responsibly.

Don't prepare recipes are attempt endeavors that will keep you locked in the kitchen all evening. You want to enjoy your party as well.

Make sure there are several viewing areas or televisions around the party area. That way everyone has a great view of the game.

Decorations are not as necessary but if you feel compelled to add some festivity to your locale, anything with a football theme, with the team colors will work. Of course, a New Orleans Super Bowl party can only have one color scheme and that's black and gold baby.

Whatever food, decor or activity you may decide to include, just make sure to enjoy the moment and as we say in New Orleans, "Laissez Les Bons Temps Rouler."

Impressive Designs Found at The Special Event 2010 in New Orleans

I just returned from the The Special Event Show and Conference 2010 in New Orleans and I must say that the investment I made in my wedding and event planning business was well worth it. I made so many great contacts and got to see some truly awesome design work. The workshops were very informative and I can't wait to start implementing some of the great tidbits and advice that I picked up along the way.

I attended the famous Wedding Luncheon and Gallery and was completely blown away by the designs exhibited by some very talented wedding and floral designers. My favorite was the gallery design exhibited by Sasha Souza of Sasha Souza Events. She worked with an element of wood as her inspiration and the end result was truly amazing. I took a few photos to share with you guys.

Turquoise is the Pantone Color for 2010

The color turquoise evokes a soothing feeling of a tropical paradise, and positive, relaxed energy, according to Pantone color experts. Knowing this, with the selection of turquoise as the pantone color for 2010, I already feel calmer, more relaxed and positive; ready to approach my year 2010 coordination events with a "woo- sah" exuberance.

Just kidding but, really, I couldn't be happier about this color choice for 2010. You know, most folks vacation to the Caribbean for this soothing, calming affect. (Me included.) So why not share this soothing color with future brides and grooms to be.

With all the wedding planning and coordination going on, engaged couples need as much positive energy as possible. This is especially true if the happy couple doesn't have a wedding coordinator yet.

Turquoise can be combined with so many other colors and will work for most any season. My favorite combination is turquoise and chocolate brown. (Sounds extra soothing with the chocolate element added.) My website combines turquoise, chocolate brown, and pink coral.

Happy Holidays Again! We just celebrated a wonderful Thanksgiving and now the Christmas and New Year holidays are approaching. This time also kicks off the engagement season. Lots of men are planning on popping the big question to some very lucky ladies, this season. Happy Thanksgiving! What Are You Thankful For?

Lately, I have found myself approaching certain holidays with no real enthusiasm or appreciation for them at all. I would only get excited about having a day off from work or a day to sleep in. But as many of you have found, this has been a very challenging year. We all have had struggles of some kind or another, me included. Realizing these challenges and how we (my family and friends) have overcome them, I must take a moment to think on all I have to be thankful for. Oh, my list is much too long to discuss here in this blog but I am taking extra time, every day, not just Thanksgiving Day, to express my gratitude to God, my Heavenly Father, for every blessing and for bringing me out of every challenge.

I have had a wonderful year, full of blessings, learning opportunities and love; and I am so thankful for all of it. I am also so very thankful that my event and wedding planning business experienced some growth and is becoming even more successful. It's not often that one can find happiness while working but I can truly say that I have. I love what I do and I so appreciate my clients that have trusted me over the year. I will work even harder in the upcoming years to continue to hold their trust as well as gain the trust of my clients I have yet to meet. Thank you again for believing in me.

Found Treasure While on Vacation

Well, I'm back from my vacation and what can I say? It was a wonderful birthday celebration cruise and I had a great time. I really could have stayed another week. We flew into San Juan, P.R. and boarded a ship for a seven day cruise to St. Thomas, Dominica, Barbados, St. Lucia, Antigua, and St. Kitts. All of the islands were beautiful, the water was gorgeous and the weather was outstanding. Just thought I would share a few of the photos from my great birthday celebration.

While I was there, I found a great venue for a destination wedding. (After all, a wedding and event coordinator never stops working. We are always looking for new venue or design element.) Stony Hill is privately owned home built high on a ridge in the north of St Lucia. Below are some photos from there website. Surrounded by one and a half acres of tropical gardens it has beautiful panoramic views. It is a perfect setting for any event but I think it would be a great choice for an intimate wedding and reception. As mentioned, the home is privately owned but there are two bedrooms available for overnight accommodations. I did spend some time at this beautiful home and I don't think there are enough pictures that really speak to it's quiet beauty and gorgeous views.

On October 10, 2009, I got the wonderful opportunity to coordinate this special wedding for a very special bride and her handsome groom. Mollie is a breast cancer survivor and it was very important for her to celebrate this in a big way, and what better way than on your wedding day. The nuptials and celebration were held at the beautiful Cedar Grove Tchoupitoulas Plantation. Hope you enjoy just a few personal photos of this wonderful wedding.

I couldn't help but post my fave. I just love this strapless, taffeta cocktail dress from Piccione from the Alfred Angelo Collection. The flirty feel and sophistication is so appreciated. Folks in the fashion industry have likened this dress to a wedding cake. (Now how decadent and yummy is that.) Yes, there are frills and what not but just think about the great pair of shoes you can pair with this dress. This dress is an excellent choice for the sophisticated bride, or a bride having an at-home or city wedding. This selection is fun, flirty and trendy, and you know, trendy is my middle name.

Great Flavor from Great Catering Vendor

I had the wonderful opportunity to experience the great food at Japaneiro's in Sugar Land, TX. They are a wonderful mix of a sushi bistro with a latin grill flair. I tasted food combinations that I thought I never would and I must say, my eyes have been opened. The seafood chupe is awesome and never in a million years would I have thought about eating yuquitos, which is yucca (root) served with a roasted bell pepper sauce. I even had some sort of octopus dish that was also fabulous. Trust me, I am a finicky eater and a creature of habit, so when I tell you it's good, trust me it is.

If you are looking for catering for a great little function with a little something extra, these folks are the ones to call. This catering option at any special or social event is an entertainment experience in itself. Jason Malinos, the Operations Manager was so hospitable and accomodating, that I can't wait to work with him on my next coordinated or planned event.

Real Wedding - Hazel & David

Decor That Keeps It's Cool - Ice Designs

Welcome to the chic decor of ice sculptures. If you are looking for a chic way to keep the beverages cool or the decor looking "fab", check out Ice Designs Inc. of Houston. I got to meet these folks at the bridal extravaganza in Houston and I was blown away by the designs created just for this event. Then I went online and saw more of their fantstic work. The ice was absolutely mesmorizing to look at. The photos below really don't do these works of art justice.

Those are flowers inside the block of ice, which made up the ice bar. Nice way to add some color.

As an event coordinator in Houston, we are always looking for new trends, and new decor options. Well, I think I've found a nice option right here in Houston. I personally would recommend an ice design for weddings, anniversary celebrations, birthday parties and especially for corporate receptions and functions.

Another Relationship Standing the Test of Time!

Wanted to say congratulations to my parents as they celebrated their 55th Wedding Anniversary, this past week. Five years ago, we coor dinated a traditional ceremony for them, where they renewed their vows and celebrated with family and friends. I am just so happy that they were blessed to be able to celebrate another five years with each other.

My parents are truly my inspiration. They have such patience with each other and they truly have fun with each other. My father kisses my mother good night, every night and he kisses her when he leaves or when he comes home. It seems trivial at first until you realize the stability and love that comes with that kiss. I enjoy watching my parents together, especially how they dote on each other without trying to show it. After 55 years it just comes naturally to them and I thank God for that. It is something I look forward to with my husband. Thanks Mom and Dad for showing me what a real relationship looks like.
